How yal doing, some of you may know my 386 cpu went bellyup so I stuck in an AMD 386 util I could find an intel 386 at the right speed (All the one I curently have are under 33mhz) I bought one for 15 dollars of ebay. It doesn't have any double sigma making wich mean it has some type of bug. I heard it has to do with 32bit stuff. Can I still use the cpu for games and windows 3.1/95 plus I have the 32bit system files for win3.1 installed. what can happen I i try to run it. |

Don't try to run systems with 32-bit bugs. They're pretty big bugs, and sound like rocks hitting the windshield. If you get one in the right place, you've got to go to the carwash to get it off. 32-bit bugs are badddddddddddddd, man!
Pathetic attempts at humour aside, it'll probably be alright or your system will be unstable. Nothing permanently bad should happen. |

No, you have it backwards. The chips with the double sigmas are the bad ones, the ones without are good. The double sigma means the chip has a crippled 32-bit mode. I could be wrong, but I think this only affects 386DX-16 chips...the ones that came out before intel designed the "386" logo. I think that most of these chips ended up on the Intel Inboards. It's pretty rare to see one of these CPUs, so I wouldn't be too concerned about it. |

For a while I was quite frustrated with "BAD" 386 CPUs many were unmarked that I could see, some where. Usually they came in the el cheapo no name mega 386 towers I used to get. At the time I rather have a 286 as it could at least run windows.
A crippled 386dx won't even boot into windows in any mode, not even on 3.0! Even some dos programs would take issue or freeze, pretty shoddy jobs. Many folks probably bought them due to the low price.
Also I have encountered the infamous can't run 32bit code error on 386dx's up to about 20mhz so there are other speeds out there. |

the cpu came today and its now time to test it out. If it works then I'll post a mesage from the 386 itself. If not ill have to use the crappy little AMD. |

Its working!  I can run windows 3.1 and IE5 and now its time to see what this 386 can do. |
