I have been wanting one of these damn modules for quite some time now, but I'm sure everybody knows that they are next to impossible to find. However, it is not impossible to find a PCI version of the Mach64GX with the module. Infact, I bought one hoping I could take the upgrade from the PCI card to use on my ISA and VLB versions. The memory chips seem to match, and the connectors seem to match....but the damn thing doesn't work.

When I boot the machine and adjust the driver to something like 1024x768 at 24bit colour depth, all but the lower right corner of the screen is readable. 1/4 of the screen is scrambled. After having a good look I see that each ATi card requests a specific Part number for the upgrade module. The ISA and PCI versions don't match. I am under the impression that ATi somehow did this on purpose so people would have to pay a premium to upgrade the older cards.

I believe that it may be possible to rewire the PCI upgrade part to function properly on a VLB or ISA card. However, I do not have one of these modules for comparison. Is there anyone in the forum that has one that is willing to make some high resolution scans for me?

It would be really great if you could do that. I don't need pictures of the whole card, just the front and back of the module so that I can see all the traces.

Are the chips the same voltage and timing on both the isa/vlb and pci cards?

It's been a while since I compared the chips on my PCI module to my ISA/VLB cards...but I was pretty sure they were identical. Anyway, I'll compare this ISA module to my PCI version trace by trace, and if it only takes a small modification to try out my theory I'll go for it. If not, I'll consider whipping up my own home brew upgrade.

Anyway, I am under the impression that with other manufacturers the upgrade modules are interchangable to various bus versions in the same product family. The Diamond Stealth64 Video family comes to mind.
