Or get wmware and make a dosinstallation on a virtual machine. (I use an XP installation on virtual machine to run keygenerators and other scary stuff) |

I absolutely agree with bear on this one, which is why I was recommending Virtual PC on my earlier post. The main difference between Virtual PC and VMWare - price. If you already have VMWare, then by all means use it, or you can download Virtual PC for free (yes I know some versions of VMWare are free).
The basic point is this - using virtualization will save the agony of having to repartition your hard drive. It might run a bit slower than running DOS in its own acutal partition, but it's functional, and you won't have to reinstall Windows XP.

nothing permenant or fast, just something that works... |
Using virtualization running a DOS virtual machine should fit the bill without too much hassle (just my opinion).

My way has always been this
Install MS-DOS on the DOS machine
Install IPX/SPX and NetBEUI protocols on the Windows Machine
Disable Encrypted Password in Windows XP (security risk, I know, but I'm willing to live with it)
Install an Ethernet adapter into the vintage PC
Install Microsoft Network Client/Microsoft LAN Manager on the Vintage PC
Set up LANman/NC to connect via one of the following ways
-- NetBEUI and/or IPX/SPX - What I use for XT based machines
-- TCP/IP with Static IP - For stubborn 286's that refuse to use DHCP
-- TCP/IP with DHCP - I use this with my 286 and higher machines
I connect to the XP machine without issue, and the XP machine uses a batch file with the command line commands programmed into it to map to network drives on the DOS machine
I kind of treat the DOS machine like a physically huge jump drive (with a teensy weensy capacity). Kind of like loading games on my DS via the flash card I have. |
