Anyone here has one of those laptops? Just got one (the SLT/286), and of course without power supply. It has rectangular 6 pin connector. The power supplies seem to be available for it but in US only. So I am looking to build it. Anyone willing to measure the voltages for me? I guess it will be standard +5V +12V and -12 or 5V, but there are too many variations.

ALthough not as elegant I would personally just wire up the battery container (usually the battery doesn't work anyway) with an external power supply, that way you don't need any extra voltages since the laptop generates them from the battery voltage.

Also I am not sure the PSU pinout has 12v, I think usually on laptops the PSU is rated significantly higher than the battery voltage so you can do a quick controlled charge.

Of course this is a solution. I did that in the past on Accura 101M XT laptop. But it is not so elegant as having real one and then I can also resurrect the battery.

hey max, i got an slt/286(big ol heavy lunch box thing)

i was reading the sticker and it says 18.3 volts, 1.8 amps

one i get a working multimeter, i'll try to get pinouts

Thanks, would be very nice. Meantime I found that my compaq is not working from battery, so the AC adaptor is only chance for now.

im hoping the 6 pinns on it are only + - , i dont wana figure out what others do

Yep, I have a 18V power supply, I have also that 6 pin plug Smile

just the pinout is missing...

well, i got the multimeter and tested the voltage levels, whats odd is that some connections produnce .9 volts or 5/6 volts and a few produce 0 volts, witch leaves me to think that there some detection circutry on here

i wish i could help, but compaq used 4 tomany pins on the power jack to see whats what...

Not to be the big meany here but most laptops can be sucessfully dissassembled, especially old ones, why not go on a voltage hunt?

On something that old its very likely that you can just look inside to figure out which pins are really power carrying ones. (aka wider trace, going to battery area)

the screws on my slt are stripped, so im not gona go there, although it needs a new RTC, mabey for a rainy day when i got nothin else to do...

I have disassembled my SLT 286 and will reply again with the
Results tomorrow. The PSU comes off in a cute little unit that
I can just run a multimeter through. One question: Does any-
one know why there may be 3 transformers in the PSU?
I found some in a row next to the flux capacitors, though the
laptop doesn't use a CRT monitor or arc-lamp backlight.

The last forum I read was over 2 years old, so I hope some of you have "Message me when to my comments someone has replied" checked in your account settings ^_^

Anyways, I have my SLT-286 from a thrift store sans charger open and before me on the desk. From what I can gather, there ARE 3 transformers in a row on the board (Maybe that was a different website. Whatever.) and the 6th pin on the computer side is ground (Circuit and connected to the chassis by Resistor 502). In this board, most of the components are on the bottom green side and it is crowded. Six TI822R-TI909B's litter the board beside 3 CD4000 series ICs and two Motorola 140508's.
The top is covered by the three transformers and three flux capacitors (There's a pretty large unmatched connector on the top side. Four pins. It must have some useful function to us). It's hard to trace the traces, but I think I've found the + and GND traces.
