i just picked up a strange MB it's a 386/486 board with 1 vlb slot but the thing is there is a little corrosion on the 252466TT chip, a very small surface mounted chip, the pins are blue from the corrosion. I cleaned up the battery as much i could, got the corrosion off of it, but the chip concernes me, should i remove the battery and either replace it or use an external one? or is it ok as it?

Also, the board is a UTD4700, 1 vlb slot 1 386 socket and a 486 socker, the 486 socket has 6 rows of pins in a square, so i think it also doubles as the coproc socket aswell onboard everything, i/o ide, floppy

well scratch any repairs on this board, i went to remove the battery and the 252466TT fell right off, taking a good length of the traces with it good thing i only paid 2.50 for it

Remove it ASAP. For decayed batteries, I always use an external battery pack (usually 2-4 AA-cells in a holder) mounted as far away from the MoBo as practical:

anonamous coward sugested using isoproly acohol for corosion, if i would of known that, i wouldn't be trying to find a working set of mem chips for an ati mach 64. as for ur battery, if its one of those 3 cell nicd cells, then you could leave it or remove it, but the time/bios data will be lost at power off, last week i found a mobo with 3 vlb slots and it was using a 66mhz ibm cpu wich seems to be 386 pin compatible, but the board was FUBARed as it looked like a car ran over it, all the slots were smashed/bent, the mobo was bent, the corner were the kb connecter was was messed up realy bad, i took out the cpu/30pin simms and its 486dlc bios, thats all that could be saved, altho, it had one of those 3.6v nicds, that wasn't leaking, imagine that. the batt outlived the mobo, very rare with ni-cd's

I take it the 66MHz IBM 386 CPU was soldered onto the board? It sounds like a blue lightning DLC-66.

yep, it was in a 386sx pinout, its n ibm 50g6663, would be fun to try out, but the only socketed 386sx i got is a 16mhz zeos laptop.

I've heard that the IBM SLC/DLC are 386 bus compatible, but not necessarily pin compatible.

any pics of the mobo, you'd be surprised at what a good soldering iron, a roll of buswire and a case of beer can do for ya!

IBM was licensed ONLY to produce boards with the chip soldered on
not to sell chips separately.
if you found a chip, it would be very unusual
there were TI chips on sime tiny MB
also soldered on. these boards, both the blue lightning and the TI chips,
often only had 4 ram sockets
One I have also has several DIPS plus the 4 30 pin sockets.

One thing you can do if the NiCad battery is
is corroded. Is wash the board with hot water and a brush . Then shake the board and set aside in a warm dry place for a WEEK.

it's not the cpu, it's one of the support chips, a really tiny one, just next to where the battery used to be.
