So I've got a decent little 286 system lined up, and just for kicks I thought it would be fun to get a NIC for it and hook it up to the Internet. There seems to be a fair bit of small-scale DOS-based Internet software, so that's no problem, and you can get ISA Ethernet cards cheap as free on eBay, but the one thing I want to make sure of is that the NIC I buy is going to work on a 286. Does anybody know which cards/chipsets are good bets for this purpose?

Stick with 3Com, Intel, Western Digital/SMC, or NE2000 clones and you'll be fine. Look for newer cards that came after the 10 Base T connections were standardized so that you don't need a transceiver. But even if you do, the CentreCom 210 series can be had for less than $10.

Mike

PS - What part of MN are you in? I'm down in Rochester.

Thanks for the advice. I'm up in Duluth, myself, though I spend my weekends about an hour south of there.
