I backed up many files to a p4 system 2g ram ide only.
I added a promise controller.
a ata133 tx2. i use this system just to store and sort files.
i did use it as a second system when i had trouble with my main system.
i have leared te hard way not to use the maib system for experimentation. even installing new programs.
despite this crtain things creep in and i really hate the mozuilkla upgrades.
for a few montjhs i did not use it as that desk was used as a pepair station.
when i hooked it up
windows came up fine.. the promise controller ata133 tx2.
seemed to detect drivces attached to it.
but caused the c drive to start offereibg ne sfe mode,
sometimes i could get into safe mode
sometimes it would just loop around.
when the extra dtive was taken off all was fine.
i changed the power supply.
not an easy task as i could not see th scre holes.
still the same. a memtest followed overnight.
I finally used norton isk doctor and win doctor.
everything seemed ok.
then c: began to click.
it still works but I cloned it.
my floppy based ghost balked
but ghost on hiren 78 worked
so I set aSIDE THE COPY WRAPPED IN BAG.
iN BETWEEN THIS i TRIED SEVERAL OTHER SYSTEMS
INCLUDING AN HP THAT IS ELEC TICALLY IDENTICAL TO THIS ONE.
SO FAR SO GOOD.
DURING THE TRY-OUTS. i FOULD A SYSTEM WITH NO FLOPPY
ONE IDE CD AND A SATA HARD DRIVE.
i TRIED THE UTILS ON A HIREN BOOT DISK.
BUT THE DRIVE XP IS PASSWORD PROTECTED
AND EVEN SAFE MODE BRINGS UP THE SAME PASSWORD.
i EVENTUALLY WILL FIND AN ANSWER.
I LOOK AT IT AS A URIOSITY
I COULD FORMAT AND RE-INSTALL BUT WHAT FUN IS THAT.
MY EYES ARE SO BAD THAT IT IS HARD TO CONNECT CABLES IN HIDEDEN PLACES. THERE IS A SLIGHT UNSTEADYNESS AS WELL AS BAD EYES.
i USED THE PROMISE CONTROLLERS WITH 98 2000 AND XP
i SEE NO DRIVERS FOR VISTA OR WIN 7.
INSTALLATION ON XP IS OFTEN HARD OR IMPOSSIBLE.
i COULD NOY INSTALL IT WHEN i DID A FTRESH INSTALL
ON THE hp
THAT IS VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL TO MY MAIN SYSTEDM.
i AM USING A SILICON IMAGE CONTROLLER ON THIS MAIN SYSTEM
INSTALLATION IS EASIER.
A BETTER CARD. |
