My trustworthy 486 started acting up a few weeks ago, not wanting to boot up and being weird and now it won't go past the Wait" message no matter what I do. It's an ASUS ISA-486SIQ motherboard. I've pulled every socketed chip to reseat it, tried it without any cache installed, swapped CPUs, swapped RAM, changed video cards, power supplies, reset BIOS defaults, everything I can think of.
It starts up normally, goes through the memory test, I can enter the BIOS setup at this point, but once the test is done it just says WAIT and never does anything else. This all started after I moved it to an outbuilding, not sure if the below freezing weather could have caused the issue or what. Maybe it just died of old age. I'm about to give up on it but I figured it wouldn't hurt to check in here for ideas.

I know this is an old thread but I just ran into this same exact issue with my 486 today.
Turns out for me, I had removed a 2nd hard drive but still had it listed in the BIOS as configured. Once I removed the configuration for the 2nd hard drive in the BIOS setup, the computer booted up past the WAIT screen. |
