I have been running this system since last winter.
Installed w 98 and everything worked properly.
Last week the cd entry in control panel /device manager went away.
the cd drive is seen in bios/setup.
I can acess it with a boot floppy
I can add these lines to c: and still see it in windows
but cannot burn cd's.
I reinstalled, both over win 98 and on a formatted drive. does not work.
Installed 98 on another much slower system and all was well.
Moved the drive here and the cd was in device manager.
added manufacturer's mb
drivers and suddenly the cd entry vanished.
any thoughts?
oh yes I have a configured drive here with w 2000
and it works. the easy thing to say is " upgrade to w2000. BUT why did it stop working? |

talked to gigabyte on the phone.
and he said " it should work even without the chipset driverrs"
the board is a p4 gigabyte ga8sg667.
and for many monmthbs it worked properly both with 98 and 2000.
( not a duqal boot) separate drive4s.
a "foreign" drive with 98 will show the floppy and hard drives without a yellow patch and an exclamation point.
so it is some kind of driver problem.
looking at the drivers and reading some text, it seems they are for w2k and above.
but why did i have sucess for over 6 months?
attempts to get it working with chipset drivers sirectly from sis were unsucessful.
so far the other drive, set up on an intel chipset system STILL shows a cd entry in control panel/device manager.
I have moved the hd and cd to a promise ata card and turned off the mb controllers. hoping I can find a way to restore the ability to see and use cd's.
but it is a total" puzzlement" |

I have been running 98 on both a celeron and a p4 with no problems
it may have been the NYB virus whick I have been cleaning
or the device drivers for a mb that were ill behaved.
possibly, It couldf have been that I inadventently started installing the xp 64 bit drivers , when I made the cd, the filenames were shortened. |
