I have acquired my second pc-xt. the NEWEST part in it is the 40mb rll drive, circa 1990. but heres the kicker, it's the floppy drive

it isn't made my magnetic peripherals OR tandon, i'm going to get a pic of it to post if i can soon, but it's got ibm labels plastered all over it *even the front plastic has ibm molded in it* , and the logic board doesn't look ANYTHING like the tandons or the mp ones. is this a rare breed i have? or somethin very not well known.

Theories?

Could have been a replacement drive (is it half-height or full-height?). I've seen a few odballs myself in the half-height catagory, with an IBM label. IBM used several manufacturers in various components early on...

it's full-height, i have a date from on the circuit board, the label doesn't have a date on it, the main chip on the logic board says this
AND it's even socketed..

Texas Instruments
C10022 DCU8423
COPYRIGHT 1981 TI
13493 PHILIPPINES

The misc chips on the board date from 1983-1984
The logic board was made by OAK
The label says it was manufactured for IBM

The drive is Type 0384-002
i'm assuming that's a date of manufacture, which would place this drive from one of the very first XT's, *which i now have*

This drive doesn't match EITHER pictures showed in the XT hardware page, but it's an IBM drive, down to the molded plastic and the cast aluminum. Even the screws holding it together are IBM blue.

Nope, that's the model:

http://www.wwch.biz/productinfo.aspx?productid=0384-002&mfg=IBM&search=extended

Best way to "guesstimate" the mfg. date is to look at the IC's and add a few weeks to the "newest" ones...

that kinda tells me it's an actual IBM made drive, made by IBM for IBM. That adds a few bucks to it's value and gives me that much more reason to keep it.
