Hey guys, just got a ST-225 for my 1984 IBM 5170 with the original disk controller card.
But I can't figure out how to set the jumper on the ST-225 there is 8 different settings on it as I can see..
Will I also need to change the jumper settings on the disk controller card as well?
And BTW can I take out the big gold plated resistor in the 5170 when I install the hard disk? |

usually you do not change anything on the drive
the 34 wire ribbon had a TWIST opposite the striped edge
and twist set the drive as D no tweist set the drive as C:
The xebec controller is a DOG. it requires a high inmterleave and the driev will have a slow transfer rate.
the western digital controller is good. the DTC works but is NOT backwards compatible with the wd./
some 2/3 length wd had proprietary bios. meaning when you types debug
-g=c800:5 it immediately started low level fpormatting the drive.
The drive parameters ( heads cyl) are set with jumpers on the controller card.
the xebec card as well as being a dog may not be able to deal with a 20mb drive.
Most wd controllers will deal with 10 20 or other sized drives
if the bios on the wd card is soldered on or a full-sized chip. it ios likely a ":super formatter bios"
that can see and set up ANY mfm drive ( or an RLL as a mfm)
remember XT and AT low level format is different and not compatible.
THIS IS a real ll format, not a pseudo one like a ide drive. If the drive was set up with a newer WD card, and older card will not work.
and a program such as WDFMT is for an AT not a XT. Possibly the ibm diagnostics disk is required to set up a driev with the xebec controller.
find and run Spintest with the wd card to determine the best interleave. possibly 4 would be good.
3 is the default. 2 or 1 is not possible on an XT. |
