I hope this helps the acrivity here
I graduated last year or was it two years from an asus p2b slot 1 p2/p3 system.
I could put 640k in it BUT win 98 required a small text cache patch to work with more than 512.
I then upgraded to win 2000 as it behaved better.
and did not have some of the shortcomings of 98.
I than went up to a P4. running w 2000.
finally a dell that allowed me to run xpp without problems.
I assumed that if it was about a certain stype and supported supported ata 133 it would also support drives larger than 120( 127m)
not true]the 4th partition was flakey very flakey
but a promise 133 controller solved that problem.
not ai have a newer dell and it has sata support
and an intel 925x chipset that supports sata as well as ide above 128(137)
so my old small 160 can be runn happily.
but I went from there to here in a setries of
rough bumps.
there si a maxtor patch to enable LBA$* with older systems but It has no doc or explanation with it.
I am about to upgrade to my son's old diual core p4 as he has a quad core. |

I'm finding out that I can find decent computer that are less than 5 years old for cheap at various places. Mainly garage sales and estate sales. My main computer now is a Dell Dimension 4700 that I found at an estate sale up the road from me for $2. Its an LGA775 Pentium 4 2.8Ghz Single core with hyperthreading. It was in pieces but had all the parts. I put it together and everything works fine. I ran XP for a little while then I managed to find a way to install Mac OSX Leopard on it. That OS fits this machine like a glove. I won't go on any further about what I did lest I be accused of being an "anarchist".
But I'm finding all kinds of goodies such as an emac g4 1.25ghz for $18. 17" LCD flat panel monitors for $10-$15 each and all sorts of semi-outdated computer goodness that is functional and still fairly decent. |
