THEREF has been a valuable recorce foir the old computer people.
richard falbo is the author
it is presently down or crippled
as he lost his hocting
I recently exchanged a message with him
it would be nice if there were a free site when he could put his 5 meg file.
I have a copy TH99FREE.TAR.GZ
but for the life of me I cannot umnzip it.
simtel.net supposedly had a copy but I cannot find it..

I gave him this url he may show up here and ask questions.

th99free.tar.gz is the text-only version of th99 (Total Hardware 99).
The whole th99 is accessible via uncreativelabs.de/th99/
It contains a downloadable copy of the th99free, however it is in the rar format:
http.//www.uncreativelabs.de/th99/th99free.rar

That should be his file, just with a different compression algorithm.
It comes in at just a little over 5 megs.

Actually TheRef is a little different than TH99, concentrating on old floppy-drives, hard-drives (and their geometry), and optical-drives. I've got both v4.3 and 4.5a sitting on my HDD. I'll just zip both up and e-mail both to you mf_2 if you like.

There's actually a slew of information that would be good to have and make available on the site, but I'm not sure of the legal status of doing so. I know I have plenty myself, but getting hold of the authors (for permission) would be challenging at best.

Walter, what subpage were you viewing? I loaded the th99 and the index page and a few subpages seem to load fine (green on black).

What kind of information is it? Maybe it will suffice if we put up a notice such as "If you see anything that's yours and you want it taken down, email us at <insert mail address here>"?
I guess iof it is just a few text files we should be fine. Of course the issue is different on old software, especially if it is not all that old and was pricey in its day.

There's old utilities and text files---mainly from my early days (c. 1992) on CompuServe---pertaining to old PC's (largely XT and '286-class machines). Setup disks and diagnostics stuff as well, but they're "lost-in-the-pile" type stuff...[/b]

mr falbo in his recent email said he had not worked on THE REF for about 10 years and that " he was not ewilling to pay for hosting"

I now have a few copies
a copy of the jumnpoerless eidemaxII
and the original manual for the eidemax ( with jumpers)
seems it will use it's bios to enable other drives in the same system to supoport up to 8.4g
the drive does not have to be connected to the card. and type 1 is set in cmos.

I find the ata 66 100 and 133 cards to
work very well in pic mb.
BUT this system is using a silicon image controller tpo operate two ide drives.
when a drive si connected to a pci ata card is just is recognized. no fuss.

Walter, it would be best if you could get him to send us something to verify that. I don't think it would be a bad thing if we could host his site (which as I recall had more than just "TheRef" files). If we had the space and authorization, there's still a lot things we could host, similar to:

Have him contact Puckdropper, not me. I don't really have the time like I once did for the administration of this site.
