I put Linux on an old laptop, and since it's a PowerPC iBook everything was quite out of date. I needed an updated GCC and so had to compile it from scratch. I had it compiling GCC for 4 days before I got the more RAM with no end in sight, and after interrupting the process and starting from scratch the process completed in only 2 days.

Conclusion: RAM is cheap for older machines, max them out! The performance booster can be significant!

Yep, even running "low-end" distros of Linux benefit from more RAM. Tried running DSL with the recommended 16MB of RAM on a 486/66. Driveswap was almost constant. Upgraded to 24MB and the improvement made the machine usable. Goes to show that it's not only Windows "recommended-minimum requirements" that define the "just-beyond-bootable" state.
