Well, i found an hd Olivetti 662 in a generic XT clone. When i turn on the system a message says 1700 (04). I tried to format hd with g=c800:5 but none of type of hd available (1-9) works and i get error 01 wrong disk type. Any idea? Thanks. |

it's possible that the olivetti uses a different address ( rather than c:800:5)
if the controller is a western digital look up the card on the wdcorp site
and seem some , like the tandy had, a different address.
You should know the parameters of the drive
cyl and heads, secrors 17 unless it is a rll than 26.
the wd cards had a drive table and a free format setting,
if the hd controller bios is a proprietary bios, you likely will NOT have the free format.
where you can type in the numbers like 615 4 6`16 616 11 5 (st 225)
is the card the original card?
another TRICK is to use somnethinbg like disk manager 5 and ONBLY use it for a low level format
YOU DO NOY wnt to set up a drive with disk manager if you can POSSIBLY avoid it.
it is fairly common for an xt-like system to loose the hd info , it is not like a messed up cmos because there is nO cmos.
try also jiggling all the connectors at both ends
look in the docs on this web site for instructions on how to set up a mfm drive on a xt compatible.
aside from using disk manager for a LL format, you canNOT use a program to ll fmt a mfm on a xt like you usually do with a 2/3/486. |
