Just for kicks, I typed in "Winfiles.com" into the address bar a while ago (more on why later) and there it was (although much different from what I remembered years ago). Now as I recall, CNet purchased the name and set up a redirect to Download.com somewhere in the '99-'00 timeline. Although the site is still "powered by" (and owned by) Download.com, it makes me wonder if the name "stuck" and download.com just couldn't compete with it?...
Now the reason. I e-mailed the owner of Chatnfiles BBS a week or so ago and inquired if he'd like copies of the shareware I had lying around (including Best of Windows95.com-December 1996 and WinFiles.com June 1998). I waiting for him to thin the list down of what he needs (there's over 60 CD's)...
Some of this stuff is really getting tough to track down... |
