I keep hearing that 939 is better because it can support dual core but what exactly makes socket 939 better than 754? |

Socket 754 is on its way out. With Socket 939, you'll still have a few years of upgradeability.
And s939 CPUs and Mobos aren't that much more expensive nowadays anyway. |

But isn't 939 older than 754? I think s939 has been around since the AMD Opteron which was more than two years ago...
But I don't really know how old s754 is... |

S754 is a single channel socket for older athlon 64 processors. At that time you had 2 choices
#1. Go with an athlon 64 and get a S754 board and get stuck with single channel ram (at that time dual channel did little to boost speed on the athlon's anyway).
#2. Go with a Athlon FX and get a S940 motherboard (then you get dual channel ram and it's roughly 3% boost in speed).
Today Amd runs both processors on the same socket (s939) and with dual channel ram. Only 2 things make the FX better.
#1. More cache
#2. Unlocked multiplier
As for socket A it's the old socket that the athlon / Athlon XP / Durron used. It came out after slot A and before s754 .
If you need to know anything about the athlon just ask me (I'v been running them from day one). |
