my wife had had a promise ultra ata133 tx2.
it allowed her to run drives faster and let her install a 120g drive. worked properly, even when we swicthed to as different barebones system

maxtor told me the maxtor and promise card were the same.
I bought some maxtor ata133 cards and installed
them. 1)primary port was not detected, 40 wire cable worked a bit more dependably

after that I corrupted 2 systems c: drive, really screwed up and file names became garbled.
I am now using the 3rd working system.
the 2nd system is back up but not all stuff is installed
after a fdisk/format and re-install the drivers were either not recognized or rapidly became corrupted
like win.com not found or other files not found.
I am NOT puttin g the controller on this system

promise was hesitasnt to allow me to flash the controller with the promise flash. I did same version as my wifes, oldest one. so far all seems to be ok I have put in several dma2 and 1 dma4 drive, have not tried the bigger drives.
I use the same brand driver when i flash the firmware. I am usinmg the promise/converted controller now on that system
any thoughts on the corruption problem?

I had that type of corruption on this computer before. This has a promise card in there and when the data got coruped lots of files went missing and the files and volume label had ascii characters in the names. cleaned the drive of and repartioned, refomated and install dos and it worked alright.

i re-did the first card with the same version as my wife's system
\it grADUALLY DEVELOPED PROBLEMS OVER SEVERAL YEARS- ABOUT 3-4 years but no real corruption
I used the improved fdisk and set 98 up with 3-40g partitions.

but in this recent case, the drives, 3.4.6 gig became quickly corrupted., I lost bookmarks and login info.
I have bookmarks at least 11/06/06 so it isn't begin again time.

in orded to offset the cost, I sold one card and now I must set it up aGAIN W/W2K AND TEST IT so my friend does not get burned.
is it possible it works only with maxtor drives? unless I re-flash it as a promise card ( which i did on the one umder stes)
I am hesitant to hook up my drive with 17g of music and the other drive with all the saved files and drivers.

so far the 2nd system, with th freshly reinstalled win 98 is working
I put on several drive4s and all worked except on , a seagate 6g
they was one that got corrupted, was dead this morning, was ok last night, detected but cannot format it
fdisk says it is ok.
other drives tested seem to eb ok
uncluding (-GULP-) my drive with `16 gigs of music
don't want to have anything happen to that.
