After a long search for a 5160 someone offered me a "something" which looks same (at least he says it) but has a 286 inside. I do not have pictures yet, so I am not sure but I suppose it is IBM 5162 (even he says it is 5151 which cannot be) So the BIG question. Is it worth to get it? And can it be downgraded to real 5160??

Yep, it does sound like a 5162 (a.k.a. XT/286), but given the rarity of those machines (est. @ 20,000 by old-computers.com), I'd leave it in-tact instead of downgrading. It would kill the value instantly...

You're sure it's a IBM? At least in Spain a lot of brands copied the IBM PC casing style in their XT/AT line in the 80's

Brands Like
Inves (Investronica)
Dynadata
Solver...
and maybe lots more...

If memory serves the XT/286 is nothing more than IBM's version of what would later be called baby AT form factor.

It was just a normal 286 motherboard w/ 640k but instead of having a real cmos you needed a setup disk. And of coarse this was all fit in the slightly smaller XT form factor case so IBM could use them up to discontinue the line.

Otherwise that is a real 286, not like my Tandy 1000rlx 286 which is crippled by an 8 bit bus externally.

Cheers
Ryan

Tandy had a way with doing that to almost all it's 286's. The 1000TL2 I had was the same way, and though it was my first "IBM Compatible", it still was also the most I ever paid for a PC ($1495) and had the least performance for its' day. No wonder the computer division almost bankrupt them (once people figured out what they had...)
