a few years agoi we bought an epson 2580 scanner for $60.00. I wanted the $120.00 model ( refurb)
but they were out of stock.
it features a 35mm film slot and a slide holder so you can at moderate resolution you photos.

after a short learing curve, my wife figured it out, and busikly started scanning lots of negatives.
a coupe of things it doesn't do.
It will not scan a single 35mm frame or a strip with overlapping frames, or 126 film ( wrong sprocket holes) or rapid square 35mm frames.
all this is, I belive software related.

I asked epson tech support and after 4-5 days the answer was " you scanner cannot handle slides and negatives"
EXCUSE ME? what has my wife been doing for 2 weeks.
is there free or shareware scanning software for USB scanners that may get us ariound this problem?

epson tech support is going to set up a scanner and see if they can figure out a work-around. ( i think the first persom may be going to the state unemployment office on monday)

seems it is software -related.
as it "doen't see what it doesn't want to see"

Maybe some third-party software will do the job.

anyway, if you need a scanner epson emporium has refurbs.

I wish I could afford a REAL film scanner.

just had a long conversation with epson
the 2590 HAS a mind of it's own
seems the hardware and the software work in a way that prevents you working the way you want
Epson says the 2480 is less sopisticated and still had the top light, but no film loaded slot, so it works with the odd occaisional negative.
it ( the 2580) uses belts and will scan a strip of 126 ( 35mm wide but one spocket perr frame)
