from early days I have had a "fear of losing a site"
and tend to save many bookmarks
well I am up to over 5500
using am-deadlink I weeded out the 404 and ither dead links MANUALLY
it aksi sorts duoplicates- likely just sorts by name.
and puts a mark by one of each dupes.
there may be several but it permits only deleting ONE while in this mode.
there is an add-on for miozilla-- just as clunky

IS there an easier way?

Netscape Communicator actually had a bookmark validation feature built in. If it got a 404 it'd change the icon so you'd know it's no longer valid.

Both SeaMonkey (the Mozilla suite successor) and Firefox have an organize bookmarks function that's fast and easy to use for pruning. They're standard selection boxes, so you can select the ones you want and press delete.

If you care to upload your bookmarks.htm file somewhere, you can use the w3c's link validator tool and check your bookmarks quickly that way.

am deadlink will " ping" and state what the bookmark is.
either 404 or whatever
I did this, went thru and deleted all bogus bookmarks
tedius manual took an hour.
didn't get a headache.
there is a "find duplicates" plucg-in. and I installed it
but it is pretty clunky
there are 2 screns top shows the dupes.
bottom, when you click on a dupe, shows 1-2-3 or bore bookmark ( word)
highlight one and then click on the bottom and it goes away. very tedius.
if there are more than 4 "bookmark" wiords the clicker at the bottom is GONE
you must chanbge from 800x600 to 1024 x 768 so it can be seen, to delete the bookmarks

each priogram requires 3 keys to delete a bookmark.
it takes 1-2 seconds for the change to take place.
slow, lots of keypresses and tedius.
I work on it a piece at a time.
