original date 05/02/1987 SEAGATE 251-1 DRIVE WARNING --------------------------- If you have a Seagate 251-1 40MB hard drive, check that it has the advertised 28mS seek time, both when it's cold and when it's hot - ie after it's been on for an hour or two. Seagate recommends the CORE test version 2.7. My 251-1 had a 28mS average seek time when cold, but after 10 minutes or so the average seek time was up to 33mS, and after an hour or so was up to 37mS. Obviously it was affected by heat. Seagate sent me a replacement unit (direct) but that unit was also temperature sensitive. A second replacement arrived and this one does have 28mS average seek time when cold and when hot. Seagate said some 40mS 251 drives were accidentally labeled as 28mS 251-1 drives and it seems they don't have a reliable method to know which are which until you put it on-line and test it. If you test your drive and don't end up with a average seek time of around 28mS (+/- a couple of mS), I suggest you call Seagate and request a replacement.
