original date 12/30/87 DE-ARCING FILES TOO BIG TO FIT ON ONE FLOPPY Usually, those who prepare arced files ara considerate enough to keep them to a reasonable size, but sometimes it can't be helped. This will explain a simple scheme to de-arc files that won't fit on one floppy. First,de-arc to a second drive then you don't have the .arc file (the source file) and arce.com or arc.com taking up space. Now,if this doesn't work (you've surely tried it but it's necessary to be a little slow when you're explaining things) . Start as above but when you get the error or disk full message (you say you already have been there?). Copy the files that are already de-arced to a new disk. Don't trust the last one, it may be incomplete. Once you have copied the de-arced files to a second disk your next step is to make more room on the original disk. now: To make room Replace the files you have copied wih files of exactly the same name but with only 3 bytes. To do this type : A:>COPY CON FILE1.COM Q then press the f6 key. (Q is the content of the file,it can be any key) You have created a 3 byte file that has overwritten the larger file. Repeat for all the de-arced files then do another "dir" (lots of space now!) Start the de-arcing again and when the ARC program asks you "FILE EXISTS - OVERWRITE (Y/N)? answer "N" This simple scheme won't help if the de-arced program must all be on one disk. Usually the .doc or .txt file and some of the options may be eliminated. I know this explanation is a bit too wordy for such a simple scheme but better that than questions. 6/22/87
