Hi,
i will want to know witch PCI 3d card can i use on a PB4 Abit PCI 486 board. I use a 3dfx 1 , 4mb, i 've tried a sli 3dfx 2 just for the fun, but it's the same as a 3dfx 1, games are very slow.
I 'm trying to use a Geforce4 mx 440 PCI (64mb ddr), the system boot, but after install the nvidia drivers, windows 95 or 98se won't to boot and the system reboot every time, there is an error 0016 in bootlog.txt file and i can't to shadow ram video in the bios. (sytem lock before boot)
Is someone use theses cards on a PCI 486 board and run Ok?

they still make PCI video cards, some with 512mb, mainly there for those cheap oem machines that lack an AGP or PCI-e bus. a 486 based pci motherboard wont realy do much good with a hi end pci card tho, altho more video ram can be good, you wont get the preformance due to the rest the motherboard being slow, such as using older 72pin simms. mabey try a different manufacture or different drivers. |

You are very limited with 3D games using a 486 of any type (slow CPU and very slow FPU).
Get a Pentium 1 of some kind and then you will have plenty of early 3D cards that will work well (Verite, Voodoo 1, Matrox Mystique, S3 Virge). |

Hmm a vidcard with memory that is faster than the system board.
I remember a utility that would allow you to use extra SVGA memory as a ramdisk, I wonder if such a thing could be made for the PCI bus?
Since you likely won't be using the 3d element you could use the better part of the 512mb (if its mapped and unused during non-3d operation)
If it could be mapped as extended memory all the better.
I wonder if anyone has ever attempted this? |
